State's best on beach set to play

Many of the best beach volleyball players in Hawai'i will compete in the Corona Extra Duke Classic Beach Volleyball tournament Saturday at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.
This is the third consecutive year Corona Extra has sponsored the event at Duke's OceanFest. The invitational tournament, presented by Riggers Hawaii, starts at 9 a.m. and action will continue until approximately 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public and supports the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.
Among those expected to compete are Tony Ching, Madison McKibbin, Erik Shoji, Troy Hotz, Justin Harris, Cory Matsukada, Alika Williams and Henry Cassiday.
Each of the four-person teams must include one woman. The roster of women includes Elise Duggins, Jan Resuello, Chastity Nobriga, Lisa Ma'a, Tanya Fuamatu Anderson, Dawn Pennebacker, Diana McKibbin and Marcie Nowack.
SURFING
APPLEBY ADVANCES
Candice Appleby of Hono-lulu advanced to the finals in two separate divisions — including the professional division — during the C4 Waterman/Honolua Surf Stand-Up Paddle Surfing competition yesterday.
The quarterfinals and semifinals in four separate divisions ran yesterday in 1- to 2-foot waves at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.
Appleby was one of two females entered in the professional division. Also advancing to the pro final were Brian Keaulana, Noland Martin and Noah Shimabukuro.
She also advanced to the final of the women's division.
All finals for the contest will be completed Saturday.

PIGOUT ON THURSDAY
Murphy's Annual Pigskin Pigout, which benefits the University of Hawai'i football program, will be tomorrow starting at 5:30 p.m. at Murphy's Bar & Grill.
Greg McMackin and his Warriors coaching staff will be in attendance.
A $100 ticket contribution gives bidding rights on auction items such as two tickets for the final game to be played at Yankees Stadium, tickets to NASCAR's Las Vegas race in March 2009 and a trip to next season's Major League All-Star Game in St. Louis.
GOLF
CHANS FAILS TO QUALIFY
'Iolani freshman Lorens Chan shot a 73 yesterday and failed to qualify for match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, N.C.
Chan's two-round total was 150 to miss the cut line of 144. A group at 145 will play today for the final two spots. The low 64 scores advanced to match play.
Robbie Fillmore of Provo, Utah, was the top qualifier with a 134.
