Big Island police warn of cashier's check scam

Hawai'i County police are warning the public about a cashier's check mail scam.

A Hilo woman reported Wednesday that she received a letter in the mail claiming to be from Confidential Evaluations Inc. with a Web site of www.imyst.com.

Included was a cashier's check with the instructions to spend specific amounts at certain businesses and to wire transfer the remainder back to the company.

Investigation of the Web site reveals that this is a scam if a letter is sent from Canada, police said. They are advising anyone who receives such a letter not to respond.
