Kaua'i mayoral candidate Bernard Carvalho has been granted a leave of absence from his county job as director of parks and recreation to focus on his campaign.

Deputy director of Parks and Recreation Kylan Dela Cruz assumes Carvalho's duties effective tomorrow.

County administrative assistant Gary Heu said, "We will ensure that the operations of the department continue without disruption."
