TONIGHT'S MIGHT-SEES

"Generation Kill" finale, 9:15 p.m., HBO. The early chapters of this miniseries — based on a real Marine unit — had a perplexing tangle of names and titles. Gradually, however, viewers could find empathy for strong men caught in a war no one seemed to have a grip on. Tonight, they reach Baghdad. This war has taken them 21 days; they figure it could be months before Americans are out of Iraq. It has been an oddly fascinating experience.

Olympics finale, 9 a.m-1 p.m. and 6-10 p.m., 10:35 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. (Monday) NBC. In the morning, there are the gold-medal finals in men's basketball and handball, plus the bronze games in men's volleyball and water polo. The afternoon brings finals for boxing, rhythmic gymnastics and men's water polo. At night, there's men's water polo and the closing ceremony. Expect a spectacle, plus a hand-off to the 2012 games in London.

OF NOTE

"The Simpsons," 8 p.m., Fox. Stuck in a carnival's tunnel of love, Homer and Marge swap love stories.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," 7-9 p.m., ABC. The team remodels the home of an Albuquerque, N.M., pastor and his family who have often given shelter to others.

"Skins," 3 p.m., BBC America. This controversial teen series has many faces. Last week's episodes gave us no one to like, but the one at 10 p.m. tonight centers on an immensely likable girl whose friends ignore her talent with the clarinet. The result has warmth and, on occasion, humor.

"Mad Men," 7,8 and 10 p.m., AMC. Early in this hour, a crisis affects Don Draper. Still, this well-made episode is really more about Peggy Olson, including a few glimpses into what happened in the gap after the first season ended.

"S.I.S.," 7 and 10 p.m., Spike. The Special Investigations Section is deep undercover in the Los Angeles Police Department, this movie says. Here's a fictional look, loaded with machismo and intensity. There's a ferocity to the crooks and sometimes the cops. It's a high-action show in the 1970s style, with extra, late-night brutality. It's fairly good, if your tastes are intense.
