Graunke among roster additions

The Hawai'i football team's roster is expected to expand by 20 today — the first day of the fall semester, when roster limits are waived — but none of the add-ons will practice until next Monday.

UH head coach Greg McMackin said the Warriors are in full "game mode" for Saturday's season opener against Florida in the Swamp.

McMackin said there would be no benefit to allowing the add-ons to practice this week.

The Warriors depart tomorrow morning for Atlanta, where they will train for two days before heading to Florida. The NCAA has a two-day waiting period before players may practice in pads.

"They won't be able to do anything," McMackin said.

The add-on list includes quarterback Tyler Graunke, who was recently activated after resolving academic issues. Graunke, who attended an NCAA orientation meeting yesterday, will not travel to Florida. But McMackin said Graunke is welcome to attend practices this week.

Graunke, who started two games last season and was Colt Brennan's primary backup the past three years, was the co-No. 1 quarterback exiting spring training. On Aug. 1, two days before veterans were scheduled to report to training camp, UH announced that Graunke would be withheld from all team activities until he resolved academic issues.

Running back Mario Cox also was invited to join the team today, although his name does not appear on the add-on list. Cox was dismissed from the team near the end of last season, but was reinstated for spring training. He is no longer on scholarship.

Offensive linemen Levi Legay and Daniel Johnson — scholarship players who were not on the training-camp roster — are add-ons. So, too, is Marc Moody, a 2007 Saint Louis School graduate who played at Mississippi Valley State last season.

Quarterback Kiran Kepo'o is not on the add-on list. His jersey No. 12 was given to junior college transfer Greg Alexander.

McMackin and his assistant coaches crafted a tentative 66-player travel roster, which will be posted after today's practice.

"We want to wait, just in case somebody gets nicked," McMackin said.

The tentative plan calls for the Warriors to take four quarterbacks — Brent Rausch, Greg Alexander, Inoke Funaki and Jake Santos.

Santos, a senior, will be used as a scout player.

"We'll need a guy to work with the defense, and he's a pretty good quarterback," McMackin said of Santos.

Rausch did not practice Friday and Saturday because of a slight strain in the right forearm and biceps of his throwing arm. McMackin said Rausch will practice today, and remains as the No. 1 quarterback.

Rausch, Alexander and Funaki will get about an equal number of snaps today, but "Brent will get the first-team reps," McMackin said.

McMackin and his staff spent several hours yesterday finalizing the details of the practice schedule. The Warriors will practice for an hour today and two hours tomorrow. They will practice at the Georgia Tech facilities Wednesday and Thursday. There will be a walk-through in the Swamp on Friday.

McMackin said the entire offensive and defensive game plans have been implemented.

"We may make some changes," he said. "I've always felt a good game plan is when you have to eliminate things throughout the week. I don't like to add things. I like to eliminate."

He also has written the "keys to success," a list he will circulate to his players.

"We want to start (the season) as high as we can, and then with reps, just get better," McMackin said. "The main thing is we have to play at the highest level that we can play and give it our best effort. I believe in these guys. I know they will play to the best of their ability."

McMackin, who was named June Jones' successor in January, said he looks forward to the season's start.

"It's been a fast seven months," McMackin said. "It's flown by. And this camp has flown by. And this season is going to fly by. Things are going fast, but we're having fun. We have to continue to get better, and strive to get better. That's what we're working hard toward."
