Early morning blaze destroys home in Puna

An early morning fire in the Puna District of the Big Island has destroyed a home that was being renovated, county officials said.

The fire, at 15-2800 Maikoiko St. in the Hawaiian Shores subdivision, was reported about 12:20 a.m. and was brought under control at 1 a.m.

Fire officials said the home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene at 12:32 a.m.

Police said the lone occupant was not home when the fire broke out.

A preliminary damage estimate was set at $120,000.
