University of Hawai'i head football coach Greg McMackin has reopened the quarterback competition, saying it "could be a game-time decision" between Brent Rausch and Greg Alexander.
McMackin said Rausch, who was named the No. 1 quarterback two weeks ago, still has tenderness in his right (throwing) arm. Rausch practiced today but it was Alexander who took the majority of snaps with the No. 1 offense.
McMackin said he will evaluate the situation when Rausch is able to throw without discomfort for long periods of time.
The Warriors open their season Saturday in Gainesville, Fla., against No. 5 Florida, which returns Heisman Trophy winner, junior quarterback Tim Tebow.
McMackin has said Rausch is the No. 1 quarterback if he is 100 percent. But UH athletic trainers recommended that Rausch have limited work today.
McMackin confirmed that Alexander has moved ahead of Inoke Funaki on the depth chart, and is at least the No. 2 quarterback.
McMackin also confirmed that Erik Robinson is the No. 1 strong safety. The coach said Mana Silva also can play at that position.
The Warriors departed this morning for Atlanta for two days before heading to Florida for Saturday's 6:30 a.m. (Hawai'i time) game.
