Hawaii SAT scores decline slightly

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's SAT scores declined slightly and continue to trail the national average, according to results released today by the College Board.

Hawai'i's average combined scores were 502 in math, 481 in critical reading and 470 in writing, each down slightly from the year before.

Nationally, scores for the most recent high school graduating class remained at the lowest level in nearly a decade.

When Hawai'i's scores are broken down by type of school:

  • Hawai'i's public school students declined slightly in all three SAT subject areas. Public schools nationally decreased in reading, held steady in writing and increased in math.

  • Students from Hawai'i's religious-affiliated schools declined in math, reading and writing, while the national group improved in those areas.

  • Private school students improved in math and writing and kept steady in reading. Their national counterparts improved in all subjects.

College Board SAT results, as well as results from the ACT, a separate college entrance exam, are generally used by colleges and universities to evaluate whether a student is prepared for college coursework.
