Democratic platform supports Native Hawaiian self-determination

Associated Press

The Democratic Party platform adopted at the national convention in Denver includes support for Native Hawaiian self-determination and sovereignty.

The platform goes on to say the party will respect Native Hawaiian cultural rights and sacred places.

Barack Obama came out in support of Native Hawaiian recognition in January before the state's caucuses.

The presumptive presidential nominee said if elected president, he would sign the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act.

The so-called Akaka bill would give Native Hawaiians the right to form a governing entity similar to those of Native Americans. The entity could negotiate with state and federal governments over control of natural resources, lands and assets.
