Hawaii Medical Center files for bankruptcy protection

Hawaii Medical Center LLC, which runs two hospitals on O'ahu, said today that it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.

Hospital officials said the two hospitals, Hawaii Medical Center East and Hawaii Medical Center West, will continue operating while the bankruptcy proceedings go forward.

"We remain confident in out long-term prospects for success," said Danelo Canete, HMC's chief executive officer. "These filings will permit us to continue to serve our patients as usual while we remain on the path to financial stability," he said.

Hawaii Medical Center acquired the two hospitals last year from St. Francis Health Systems. Hawaii Medical Center East, on Liliha Street in Honolulu, and Hawaii Medical Center West, in 'Ewa Beach, have a total of 342 beds combined.
