Hawaii Red Cross volunteers head to the Gulf Coast

Advertiser Staff

In anticipation of Hurricane Gustav, five volunteers from the Hawai'i state Red Cross are on their way to help residents in the Gulf of Mexico.

The volunteers will help with the American Red Cross relief operations as the storm is poised to enter the gulf this weekend. Gustav is headed toward New Orleans, Louisiana and possibly Texas and Mississippi.

The Red Cross has set up operations across several gulf states in anticipation of the storm that could lead the evacuation of residents.

Volunteers John Wachholtz, Esther Lau, Carolyn Hall, Tom Worthington and Mark Parrella will be heading to Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Dallas.

They will be helping set up shelters for evacuees and provide health services.

The Red Cross is deploying 100,000 cots, 200,000 mobile feeding trucks and tens of thousands of ready-to-eat meals.
