Chaminade volleyball 1-1 in tournament

Courtney Lorusso had 15 kills and Trina Kauliakamoa added 10 as Chaminade opened its women's volleyball season with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 win over Embry-Riddle yesterday at McCabe Gym.

Later yesterday in its second match of the Hawai'i Invitational, Cal Poly Pomona knocked off Chaminade, 25-19, 28-26, 25-16, also at McCabe Gym.

Against Embry-Riddle, Chaminade coach Glennie Adams was happy getting the victory, but was concerned about the defense.

"We need to do better defensively," Adams said.

The Swords were out-dug 49-35.

Chaminade's offense fared better, hitting .287 from the floor on 38 kills.

Embry-Riddle hit .190.

Gina Conley led the Eagles with 11 kills, and Jessica Stehle added 23 assists. Angela Woo, a Kapolei High alum, had six kills for the Eagles.

In the later match, Cal Poly Pomona got 11 kills from Vanessa Williams in winning its season opener.

Lorusso again led the Silverswords with 10 kills.

  • Kelly Balanay had nine kills and Hawai'i Pacific had 22 aces in a 25-20, 25-10, 25-21 victory over Embry-Riddle last night at Neal Blaisdell Arena in the Hawai'i Invitational.

    Stefania Aladjova had 19 assists, nine digs and seven aces for the Sea Warriors in their season opener.

    Woo had six kills for Embry-Riddle (2-1).

  • Agnes Tuilevuka had 20 kills and Losaline Faka'osi added 15 as Brigham Young-Hawai'i opened its season with a 28-26, 29-31, 25-22, 25-20 victory over Nebraska-Kearney (0-1) last night in the Hawai'i Invitational at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

    Ane Vea added 12 kills for BYUH, while Faylynn Merrick had 11.

    BOLO LEADS UH-HILO OVER ST. MARTIN'S

    Mary Claire Bolo had eight kills as Hawai'i-Hilo beat St. Martin's (Wash.), 25-12, 25-18, 25-19, in the Hawaiian Style Classic last night at UHH gym.

    Josimara Pinheiro and Kaniu Hernandez each added six kills for the Vulcans in the season opener for both teams.

    Andrea Tarbet had eight kills for St. Martin's, which hit minus-.038.

    SONOMA STATE MEN ROLL OVER BYUH, 5-0

    Ross Middlemiss scored three goals as fifth-ranked Sonoma State rolled to an easy 5-0 season-opening win over Brigham Young-Hawai'i in a men's soccer match yesterday in La'ie.

    The Seawolves scored four goals in the first half.

    Sonoma State scored at the 14:51 mark on a short, tap-in goal by Nathan Medina and got a second goal just over a minute later by Middlemiss.

    Doug Carr added a score at the 33:29 point and Middlemiss scored again just seconds before the end of the half to stake the Seawolves to a 4-0 halftime lead.

    In the second half, Middlemiss completed a hat trick with the only goal of the half at the 52:24 mark. For the game, Sonoma State outshot the Seasiders 25- 10.

    UC SAN DIEGO MEN SHUT OUT UH-HILO, 2-0

    Aaron McDowell and Shane Nicheil each scored a goal as UC San Diego topped UH-Hilo, 2-0, yesterday at La Jolla, Calif., in the season opener for both men's soccer teams.

    Ivan Mercado made three saves for the Vulcans.

    TEXAS-PERMIAN BASIN TOPS HPU MEN, 2-1

    Gage Peterson and Luis Paiva each scored a goal as the University of Texas-Permian Basin beat Hawai'i Pacific, 2-1, yesterday in the season opener for both men's soccer teams at the Aqua Hotels Classic in La'ie.

    Linus Ekden scored for HPU.

    HPU WOMEN POST 2-1 WIN OVER TEXAS-PB

    Vailima Walker scored an unassisted goal at the 65-minute mark to lift Hawai'i Pacific University to a 2-1 victory over the University of Texas-Permian Basin in the season opener for both women's soccer teams at the Aqua Hotels Classic in La'ie.

    Katrina Torres put the Sea Warriors up 1-0 in the first half, scoring off an assist from Lauren Avenue. Texas-Permian Basin scored on a penalty kick in the second half.

    SONOMA STATE WOMEN TOP UH-HILO, 2-0

    Freshman Kiley Brown scored twice as Sonoma State shut out UH-Hilo, 2-0, yesterday at Kea'au Field in the season opener for both women's soccer teams.

    The Seawolves outshot the Vulcans, 12-8.
