Olelo TV to begin election programming

HONOLULU – 'ślelo Community Television will launch "VOTE! 2008" Monday on cable Channel 49 FOCUS.

The programs will run through the Nov. 4 general election and seeks to create an informed electorate and

encourage voter turnout.

VOTE! 2008 programs will air daily from 7-9 a.m., 1-3 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., with other community submitted elections or issue-oriented programming to play in between.

VOTE! 2008 programming will include the following three initiatives:

• Candidates in Focus: Five-minute, unedited, uninterrupted messages from more than 50candidates running in O'ahu and statewide races.

• Forums: Four one-hour forums on Constitutional Convention issues presented by the League of Women Voters of Hawai'i and the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs. The four panels, comprised of subject experts, discuss the issues of Native Hawaiian affairs, the ConCon process, education, and the environment.Some of the participants include: Former Gov. John Waihee, U.H. Hawaiian Studies Professor Jon Osorio, Attorney and President of the 1978 ConCon William Paty,Former State Rep. Jim Shon, HSTA President Roger Takabayashi, and U.H. Constitutional Law Professor Jon Van Dyke.

A four-hour seminar, "A Primer on ConCon," which covers the history and context for the vote on the state constitutional convention. Sponsored by the LWVH, HIPA and the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law, the seminar's participants include: Robert F. Williams,associate director, Center for State Constitutional Studies, and Ann Feder Lee, author of The Hawaii State Constitution, A Reference Guide.

"Surviving Turbulent Times" Forum. Business leaders discuss the economic challenges facing Hawaii in this90-minute session conducted by The Honolulu Advertiser. participants include: David Carey, president and CEO of Outrigger Enterprises Group; Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines; and Chason Ishii, president of Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties.

• Debates and Issues Discussions: Candidates running for state senate and Honolulu City Council seats will debate timely issues of community importance. In addition, several subject experts will discuss issues such as: the Hawaii economic forecast, the two-part system, public education, first-time voters, and kids' vote. The debates and discussions will be videotaped during KHPR Hawaii Public Radio's live radio broadcasts.
