UH-Hilo volleyball team stays unbeaten

Mary Claire Bolo hammered 18 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo outlasted Metro State (Denver, Colo.), 25-18, 18-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-8, last night in a Hawai'i Invitational women's volleyball match that lasted 2 hours, 35 minutes at the UHH gym.

Josimara Pinheiro added 13 kills and 19 digs, and Laura Rodriguez had 11 digs for the Vulcans, who improved to 2-0.

Anna Mapes had 14 kills, Bri Morley added 11 kills and Sarah Vallejos contributed 19 digs for Metro State (1-1).

Elsewhere in Hawai'i Invitational play last night:

  • Colleen Sweeney had 16 kills as Cal Baptist, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, swept Chaminade, 26-24, 25-11, 25-17, at McCabe Gym.

    Fei Shi added 13 kills and five digs for Cal Baptist, which improved to 6-0.

    Trina Kauliakamoa had 11 kills and seven digs, and Tanya Alvino added 20 assists for Chaminade (1-2).

  • Anne-Marie Hofmans had 13 kills and 12 digs as Cal Poly Pomona defeated host Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 20-25, 27-25, 25-17, 27-29, 15-7, at Cannon Activities Center.

    Jenna Young added 14 kills and Vanessa Williams 11 for Cal Poly Pomona, which improved to 2-1.

    Faylynn Merrick had 15 kills and Losaline Faka'osi added 14 kills and 10 digs for BYUH (1-1). Melanie Manutai contributed 21 digs and LeeAnn Mapu had 13 digs and 46 assists for the Seasiders.

  • Shelby Workman had 11 kills and Kelsey Werner 10 as Nebraska-Kearney defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22, at Blaisdell Arena.

    Kelli Wemhoff added 12 digs for Nebraska-Kearney (2-1).

    Julia Gruszecka had eight kills and Tricia Yoshimura 14 digs for HPU (1-1).

    HALL OF FAMER STANLEY LEADS CAMPS FOR BOYS

    Jon Stanley, a 1968 Olympian and member of the Volleyball Hall of Fame, is conducting camps in conjunction with the East O'ahu Boys Volleyball Club.

    Stanley, whose son Clay recently won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the Beijing Games, will coach the camps for boys ages 12 to 14 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Star of the Sea School in Kahala.

    The ongoing camps, which run in four-week cycles, focus on fundamentals, skills and court knowledge. Cost is $75.

    SEKONA'S GOAL PROPELS BYUH TO OPENING WIN

    Freshman forward Margaret Sekona scored in the 27th minute, lifting Brigham Young Hawai'i to a 1-0 season-opening victory over visiting Washburn (Kan.) yesterday.

    Sekona scored off a crossing pass from Emily Mearns and freshman goalie Scottie Prince helped secure the win by stopping four shots on goal.

    ALZHEIMER'S FUNDRAISER SCHEDULED FOR SEPT. 7

    The Alzheimer's Association will hold its annual Memory Walk at Fisherman's Wharf Sept. 7 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

    The event includes a contest for the "Most Memorable Team," where teams dressed in a theme have a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree at Ala Moana and Ward centers.

    All teams that register will get a team picture and a T-shirt. Five teams will win more than $2,500 worth of shopping sprees.
