CFB: Texas DT arrested on drunken driving charge

Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas defensive tackle Lamarr Houston was arrested on a misdemeanor drunken driving charge a few hours after the No. 11 Longhorns' 52-10 season opening win over Florida Atlantic.

Texas coach Mack Brown issued a statement saying any punishment would be "handled within our family."

Last season, he suspended linebacker Sergio Kindle and defensive end Henry Melton for the first three games after drunken driving arrests, saying "we've got send a message and kids have to learn."

Texas plays at Texas El-Paso on Saturday.

Houston started against Florida Atlantic on Saturday night and had three tackles. He was arrested after a minor accident in the downtown entertainment district about 3:15 a.m. Sunday. No one was injured, Austin police said.

Austin police spokesman James Mason told The Associated Press that he had no information on whether anyone else was in the car with Houston.

"We're aware of Lamarr's situation and are disappointed anytime one of our players is accused of wrongdoing. We take a strong stance against drinking and driving and will thoroughly investigate this situation," Brown said.

"Following the completion of the legal process, we will do what's best for the university, Lamarr and the team. One thing we have really prided ourselves on in our program is our family atmosphere, and this will be handled within our family."
