Advertiser Staff

A California woman was killed Friday on Maui when her motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on Hana Highway, police said.

Melissa Zander, 54, of Glendale, Calif., was heading toward Pa'ia near Ho'okipa Beach Park at 4:47 p.m. when she crossed the center line and hit the Ha'iku-bound truck, police said.

The 52-year-old Ha'iku man driving the truck, who was alone in the vehicle, was not injured.

Zander was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Her death was the 14th on Maui County roadways this year, one fewer than by this time last year.

PEDESTRIAN HIT BY MOTORCYCLE

A 21-year-old man from Wahiawa was in critical condition last night at The Queen's Medical Center after he was hit by a motorcycle in Waipahu, police said.

The driver of the motorcycle was in serious condition.

Police said the motorcycle was west-bound on Uke'e Street near Kau Street when it hit the man at 6:21 p.m. on Friday.

The motorcyclist, a 24-year-old man who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle, police said. His initial condition was critical but was upgraded to serious.

It appeared that speed was a factor, police said.
