Late TD lifts 'Iolani to 11-8 win

Kela Marciel caught a pass from Jarrett Arakawa on fourth-and-10 and raced to the end zone for a 77-yard touchdown with 23 seconds remaining yesterday to lift 'Iolani to an 11-8 victory over visiting Kaimuki in non-league action at Eddie Hamada Field.

The defending Division II state champion Raiders improved to 2-1. Kaimuki, which is playing in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red (Division I) Conference, fell to 1-2.

The Bulldogs had taken an 8-3 lead with 1:01 left on Tevita Aholeilei's 1-yard TD run. But the extra-point attempt was blocked.

After three straight incompletions, Arakawa dropped back to pass and was about to be sacked by Desmond Tautofi but unleashed a 20-yard pass over the middle to Marciel, who was running a crossing pattern.

Marciel caught the pass in stride and broke to the outside before outracing two defenders down the right sideline.

"I actually was throwing to Kela even though it didn't look like it," said Arakawa, a 6-foot, 180-pound junior left-hander who was making his first start of the season.

"(The play) was a high-low, and Kela was running the backside route. I knew at the snap that he could get open and make a play for us."

Kaimuki coach Darren Johnson said his team was in a prevent defense.

"We had the sack, but (Marciel) made the play," Johnson said. "He did a good job."

Kaimuki took a 2-0 lead with 1:30 remaining in the first half when 'Iolani running back Kellen Imada was tackled in the end zone one play after Marciel — who was playing cornerback — made a spectacular leaping interception with his left hand at the 1-yard line.

The Raiders took a 3-2 lead on Andrew Skalman's 27-yard field goal with 7:28 left in the game.
