Memorial service Friday for famed artist Peggy Chun

Advertiser Staff

A memorial service for famed Honolulu artist Peggy Chun will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Kawaiaha'o Church with a visitation from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Chun, 62, died Nov. 19 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Her grandfather, mother and twin sister also died of the disease.

Chun was diagnosed with ALS in 2002 and though it caused paralysis and eventually prevented her from painting with her hands, she continued to share her art by putting a brush between her teeth. When paralysis made her unable to paint with her mouth, she continued to paint by using a computer that read her eye movements.

Chun was born Mary Margaret Richard on June 4, 1946, in Lawton, Okla. She moved to Hawai'i in 1969. She first became known for creating handcrafted Hawaiian-themed Christmas ornaments, but was moved to pick up a paintbrush after her twin sister, Bobbie, an artist, died in 1987.

Chun is survived by husband Elroy, son Eric, daughter Leslie Streuli, stepson Bruce Yong, father Joseph Richard, brothers Jose Perry, John Peter, Matthew and Michael Richard, sister Camile Fox and three grandchildren.
