Sailboat sinks near Magic Island, no injuries

Advertiser Staff

State harbors division personnel will try tomorrow to identify a sailboat which sank today near Magic Island.

Honolulu Fire Department rescue specialists responded today at 3:15 p.m. but divers were unable to determine the boat's number, which is covered by silt. No one was aboard the 18- to 20-foot sailboat, which sank about 30 feet off the diamondhead side of Magic Island and the yacht harbor, said Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The owner of boat is unknown. Witnesses saw the boat moored yesterday near the location of its sinking, Kealoha said.

The sinking is not presenting any problems for boating traffic, according to Kealoha. The hull is submerged in shallow water but the mast is visible, said Kealoha.
