Golf: Surfing injury forces Scott out of Australian PGA Championship

By Dan Baynes
Bloomberg News

Adam Scott, the world No. 17-ranked golfer, withdrew from this week's Australian PGA Championship after injuring his knee while bodysurfing.

Scott, 28, told organizers he would skip the A$1.5 million ($960,000 million) tournament at Coolum after injuring his right knee as he waded in the surf at a nearby beach two days ago, his manager Justin Cohen said.

"He stood in a sand depression and twisted his right knee a little bit," Cohen said in an e-mailed statement. "This is fully precautionary. We do expect him to be back in action and ready to go for the Australian Open."

Australiaís Scott, who is yet to win a tour title in his home country, had been one of the tournament favorites for an event that also features defending champion Peter Lonard and major winners John Daly and Geoff Ogilvy. The Australian Open begins Dec. 11.
