CFB: Florida QB Tebow will likely check on NFL draft status

By DAVID JONES
Florida Today

GAINESVILLE — Florida junior quarterback Tim Tebow said he will likely file the paperwork with the NFL to see about his possible draft status, should he elect to leave school early for the NFL.

"I think that's something I'll probably do," he said after Tuesday night's practice. "I think that would be a wise thing to do, just to see."

Meanwhile, CBS announcers Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson, who will work Saturday's SEC Championship Game between Florida (11-1) and Alabama (12-0), think Tebow still has a solid shot at repeating as the Heisman Trophy winner.

"I think he's one of two guys," Danielson said. "I mean he's right there. If he has a big game in this game, you better have a great one against him (to beat him out)."

They're not alone. Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman winner, told Florida Today that he thinks Tebow is very much still in the Heisman race.

"I think he's got a shot, no question," Griffin said. "He's got a good shot."

Griffin plans to watch the SEC title game before deciding how he will vote. Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, who meets Missouri in the Big 12 title game later Saturday, is considered the front-runner by most experts. But Danielson doesn't think it's fair to compare Tebow's statistics to Big 12 quarterbacks.

The Heisman finalists will be announced at 6 p.m., Dec. 10 on ESPN.

"I've got to say, the stats in the Big 12 are like pesos," Danielson said. "I mean they just aren't worth much. Everybody's got stats there. It's like 300 pesos for a half-gallon of milk."

Added Lundquist: "I understand the point. I watched the game with half of America on Saturday night, Oklahoma State-Oklahoma. And I don't know which was more noticeable: the great offensive show by both teams or the total lack of defense by both teams."

Tebow was also named a finalist in two more awards on Tuesday. He's one of five finalists for the Walter Camp national player of the year and one of 10 finalists for the Manning Award, which goes to the top quarterback after the bowl games are played. Lundquist insists Tebow still has "a heck of chance" to win the Heisman.

Danielson, however, doesn't think Tebow will win, "Unless he has a monster performance against Alabama. He's going to have to put on a show."
