To raise awareness of the importance of clean air, a dozen Island entertainers will help the American Lung Association of Hawai'i stage "The Breathe Concert" at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Hawai'i Theatre.

Cathy Foy-Mahi, a veteran performer and ALA board member, will co-emcee with Al Waterson, a former smoker.

The line-up includes:

• Amy Hanaiali'i, whose repertoire includes jazz, blues, Hawaiian and pop.

• Slack-key guitarists George Kuo, Martin Pahinui and Aaron Mahi.

• Vocalist Sonya Mendez, who blends pop, jazz, rock, Broadway and Hawaiian.

• Kanoe Miller, a classic hula dancer specializing in hapa-haole dances at the Halekulani Hotel.

• Sean Na'auao, a singer-musician-composer-producer best known for his hit "Fish and Poi."

• 'Ukulele master Roy Sakuma.

• Jake Shimabukuro, the 'ukulele virtuoso who has taken his fast-finger artistry around the world.

• Mihana Souza, who performs as a soloist and as a member of her late mother's Hawaiian music group, Puamana.

• Leon Williams, a Brooklyn-born Island resident who assists in leading worship at First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu at Ko'olau.

• Lea Woods Friedman, a Honolulu-born lyric soprano who has regularly performed with the Hawai'i Opera Theatre since 2001.

The concert — in its second annual outing — supports ALA's mission to prevent lung disease and promote lung health through research and education, supporting clean air and smoke-free indoor environments to enhance clean breathing.

"Over 154,000 people in Hawai'i have some form of lung disease, so clean air is more than an environmental issue," said Jean Evans, executive director of ALA of Hawai'i. "It's an everyday matter of life and breath."

Tickets go on sale today at the Hawai'i Theatre.
