Man who died in Big Island jail ID'd

Big Island police identified a man who died Saturday while in custody as 47-year-old Barry Joseph Curl of Hilo.

A coroner's inquest was being conducted by the police Criminal Investigations Section, and an autopsy has been scheduled.

Police Internal Affairs is conducting an independent administrative investigation to see if any department policies and procedures were violated in connection with Curl's death, police said.



WAI'ANAE COUPLE ROBBED AT HOME

An elderly couple was robbed at gunpoint early Sunday by two men who broke into their Wai'anae home.

No injuries were reported in the 5:30 a.m. robbery, and police have made no arrests.

The robbers fled with the 83-year-old woman's handbag.

Police said the bandits, one carrying a pistol, confronted the woman and her husband, 85, inside the home and demanded money.
