Honolulu man convicted of evading state taxes

Advertiser Staff

A state Circuit Court jury has found Clifford K. Parker of Honolulu guilty on six counts of attempting to evade or defeat tax and six counts of willful failure to file a return relating to the tax years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Parker attempted to evade paying state taxes by maintaining a false form HW-4 (Employee's Withholding Allowance and Status Certificate) with his employer, falsely

claiming 99 exemptions or allowances, failing to timely file his individual state income tax returns, and failing to pay his state income taxes due and owing for the years at issue, according to a news release from the state Department of the Attorney General, which teamed up with the Department of Taxation on the case.

Attempting to evade or defeat tax is a class-C felony punishable by up to five years

imprisonment or a $100,000 fine, or both. Willful failure to file a return is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year imprisonment or a $25,000 fine, or both.

Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 9 before Circuit Judge Steven Alm.
