Punahou pounds Leilehua for first state football championship

Behind a air-tight defense, top-ranked Punahou buried No. 2 Leilehua, 38-7, tonight for its first First Hawaiian Bank State Football Division I championship at Aloha Stadium.

Punahou has now won 25 different state tournaments of a possible 31 (including both genders). But now it has the crown jewel in the collection in the 10th anniversary of the tournament. It also was the most lopsided.

The Buffanblu had four interceptions off last year's state tournament standout, Leilehua quarterback Andrew Manley. They also sacked him three times and hurried him into errant throws.

The Buffanblu stormed out to a 21-0 lead before the Mules got on the board with no time showing on the clock to make it 21-7 at the half.

Punahou's defense dominated the first half. The Mules didn't cross midfield until four minutes left in the half. But it wasn't until Leilehua recovered a fumble with 2:12 left in the half that it could move on Punahou to get its first score, a five-yard TD pass from Manley to Newman on an out pattern to the right flat.

Leilehua managed just 90 yards at the half; Manley had just 84 yards passing on 15-of-27 passing. He was intercepted once and sacked four times.

Punahou wasted little time after taking the opening kickoff, needing just three plays to move 61 yards with Shutter hitting Mark Silverstein on a 28-yard TD pass to make it 7-0 just 55 seconds into the game.

The teams later exchanged fumbles before Brian Suite intecepted Manley with 5:11 left in the first quarter. The Buffanblu used five plays to move 43 yards and scored when Shutter dropped back to pass, couldn't find an open receiver and ran up the middle into the end zone to make it 14-0 with 3:33 left in the first quarter.

Punahou opened the second quarter with its third TD, a 38-yard run by Hilliard to make it 21-0.

The Mules defense managed to hold the Buffanblu before breaking through with Newman's TD to end the half.

Leilehua's first eight possession resulted either with a punt or a turnover before it scored.

Meanwhile, the Buffanlu worst starting field possession on its nine series was their own 38. It was the only time the Buffanblu ended up punting.
