Mumbai victims service scheduled

 •  Chabad's openness a liability

Chabad of Hawaii will hold a memorial service for the victims of the Mumbai terrorist attack at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Ala Moana Hotel, 410 Atkinson Drive, second floor.

The hourlong memorial includes a multimedia presentation, and victims who will be mourned include those killed at the Chabad location in India.

RWANDA SURVIVOR RETURNING TO ISLES

Immaculee Ilibagiza, the survivor of the Rwandan genocide attacks who was voted one of Beliefnet's most inspirational people, returns to Hawai'i for several events in January.

A movie on her life is currently in the works and she was featured on "60 Minutes" and "Oprah."

    FREE CLASS TEACHES CENTERING PRAYER

    A free class, "Morning of Centering Prayer," a form of Christian meditation, will be held 9 a.m. Dec. 20 at Central Union Church's women's building, 1660 S. Beretania St.

    MISSION OBSERVES 120TH ANNIVERSARY

    To mark the start of the 750th memorial commemoration of the founder of Jodo Shinshu, Shinran Shonin, and the 120th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii, a proclamation service will be 9:30 a.m. Dec. 21 at the betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway.

    The service will be followed by a Q&A session for commemoration projects, fundraising, activities and events.

    BLESSINGS OFFERED AT SHINTO SHRINE

    The Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii is offering a traditional Japanese New Year's blessings at the Shinto shrine, 215 North Kukui St., beginning at midnight New Year's Eve and continuing until 5 p.m. New Year's Day.

    After that, blessings continue for the first few days during the day and new ofuda (talisman) and omamori (amulet) will be blessed. The Jan. 2-4 hours of the shrine will be 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    JESUS AND BUDDHA FOCUS OF PROGRAM

    "Fragmentary Considerations Concerning Two Men and Two Trees," a free program on Jesus and Buddha, will presented 3 p.m. today at Mystical Rose Oratory on the Chaminade University campus, 3140 Wai'alae Ave., part of the Rev. Yoshiaki Fujitani interfaith program lecture series.

    The event has the Rev. Joseph Lackner as presenter; Rev. Tatsuo Muneto, director of Buddhist Study Center, as respondent; and Roger Epstein of the Hawaii Forgiveness Project as moderator.
