Maui flood insurance rate maps being revised

The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently completed a preliminary update of Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Maui County. When finalized in October 2009, the revised flood maps will affect flood insurance rates for property owners near Waikapu Stream, Kama'ole Gulch in South Maui, and 'Iao Stream, according to the county Department of Planning.

The department plans a drop-in informational session for affected property owners from 3 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Velma McWayne Community Center in Wailuku. Property owners can view the preliminary revised flood maps, check their property's risk status, inquire about flood insurance, and learn about the FEMA appeal process. The deadline to appeal is Dec. 29.

Officials said property owners also can learn about the possibility of paying lower insurance premiums by purchasing flood insurance prior to reclassification to a higher flood risk.
