Not much has changed for swimmer Brittany Beauchan in the past couple years.

The 2007 Punahou School graduate is in her second year at UCLA and while the shade of blue on her swimsuit may be a little lighter, her success — whether as a Bruin or Buffanblu — has continued.

Beauchan, who is from Kailua, attended Kalaheo as a freshman before transferring to Punahou, where she helped the Buffanblu to state titles in her junior and senior seasons.

"Hawai'i swimming is definitely different from swimming in the Pac-10," said Beauchan, who trained at her alma mater over the Thanksgiving weekend. "The (Punahou) coaches were telling their swimmers that they need to get back to basics and that's exactly what I was told me when I got to UCLA ... I had to accept criticism, but it helped to make me better."

Already this season, Beauchan has collected at least half a dozen first-place finishes, mainly in the 100-yard breaststroke.

In the season-opening dual meet against San Diego on Oct. 25, Beauchan took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke and was on the winning 200-yard medley relay team.

"Last year was kind of disappointing (because) we didn't qualify very many for the NCAAs. That San Diego meet, everyone just wanted to get after it," Beauchan said. "This year I want to swim every race like it's my last."

But it wasn't always as easy as Beauchan makes it look. As a freshman last year, her best finish was a second in the 100 breaststroke against Cal.

However, she still managed to finish 11th in 100-yard breaststroke and 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke events at last year's Pac-10 Championships. Beauchan also competed in the 100 breastroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. last June.

"That was very, very nerve-racking. In fact, it was the most nervous I've been in my life. I woke up shaking, knowing that it was the day," Beauchan said. "The pool was raised and the waiting area with the warm-up and cool-down pools were beneath it, so you could hear the rumbling. I honestly felt like a gladiator; it was like I was going into battle."

UCLA, which finished fourth in the Pac-10 last year, next competes in the UC Irvine Sprint, Distance and Relay Meet on Jan. 3-4.
