Rains cause some road closures on Kauai

Advertiser Staff

Kauai Police closed two roads on the south side of the island due to flooding and one road is partially closed while a powerline is repaired.

The new western bypass around the town of Koloa remained closed this morning because of ponding on the road, said Officer Derek Lorita.

The bypass, Ala Kalanikaumaka, runs from 'Oma'o Road to its roundabout intersection with Po'ipu Road.

Portions of Ho'one and Kuai roads, near Brennecke's Beach, were closed after two cars flooded their engines in high water, Lorita said.

A low-lying portion of Weliweli Road, southeast of Koloa, was reopened about 9:30 a.m. after water receded, Lorita said.

Kauai Island Utility Cooperative workers were repairing a powerline pole on Pe'e Road, but one lane was open for traffic.
