'Snowman' goes to 221 schools

 •  Over-reliance on adjunct faculty risky, studies say

Honolulu-based architecture and environmental consulting firm Belt Collins is donating copies of "The Hawai'i Snowman," a new local Christmas book, to 205 public elementary schools and 16 private schools.

The new book is illustrated by Belt Collins' award-winning graphic artist Michel Lé and written by his wife, Christine Lé.

A reading of "The Hawai'i Snowman" will be at 11 a.m. today at Fern Elementary School.

Hawai'i State Board of Education Chairwoman Donna Ikeda and Department of Education superintendent Patricia Hamamoto will receive the gift and be at the reading, to be performed by Belt Collins Hawai'i President Mike Terry.

Michel and Christine Lé will present some of the original illustrations from the book and talk about the story.

SENIORS LEARN TO BUILD A BUSINESS

McKinley High School seniors in the school's Pookela Academy have partnered with Junior Achievement of Hawai'i to learn basics of starting a small business.

About 40 students are participating in lessons on building a business — from producing and marketing their product to managing resources and expenditures.

Since October, two Junior Achievement of Hawai'i volunteers, Phil Young of Finance Factors and Mark Cunningham of Hawaii National Bank, have worked with the students once a week to help solidify their business plans.

Junior Achievement of Hawai'i Inc. was founded in 1957 to educate and inspire young people about the value of free enterprise, business and economics.
