Hawaii surfers advance at Maui

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i surfers Megan Abubo, Melanie Bartels and Carissa Moore advanced to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Maui women's contest yesterday.

The first, second and third rounds were run in 4- to 5-foot waves at Honolua Bay, Maui.

Moore scored the upset of the day, eliminating Peru's Sofia Mulanovich in the third round, 12.5-5.75. Mulanovich is the No. 2-ranked surfer in the world. Moore is 16 and a junior at Punahou School.

"It's an honor to be surfing with all my heroes," Moore said. "It's just a real treat to be able to surf Honolua Bay with just another girl out. I was just having fun, and I'm happy to have the opportunity to surf again."

Moore had to win a separate trials heat to earn a spot in the contest.

The Billabong Pro Maui is the third, and final, event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Moore won the first contest in the series at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.

Bartels was one of the standouts of the day, receiving a two-wave score of 16.8 (out of 20) in her third-round victory.

"I had a great time out there," she said. "I have the Hawaiian mana and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the event."

Moore and Bartels are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinals.

Abubo is scheduled to face Brazil's Silvana Lima, whose two-wave score of 18.0 in the third round was the best of the day.

Australians Layne Beachley and Stephanie Gilmore also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Beachley is the current leader in the Triple Crown standings. She has already announced that she will retire from the world tour after the Maui contest.

"Of course I would love to finish up with a win here in Maui or by winning the Vans Triple Crown," said Beachley, a seven-time former world champion. "Anybody would. But for me, I'm just very relaxed and wanting to surf well."

Gilmore, who clinched the 2008 world championship last week at Sunset Beach, is a close second in the Triple Crown ratings.

"It's pretty close and I think who ever performs better here will claim it," Gilmore said. "I've been pretty relaxed since the ASP women's world title race finished, but I still want to win every heat I'm in. I'd love to leave Hawai'i with the Triple Crown in my pocket."

One more day of competition is required to determine a champion.
