Advertiser Staff

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAI'I, O'ahu — Approximately 40,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into the Mokapu Central Drainage Channel between 6:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Marine Corps officials reported.

At the same time, another 2,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into Kane'ohe Bay near Hale Koa Beach at MCB Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay.

The spills resulted from excessive flows into the base wastewater treatment plant due to heavy rains at the time. MCB Hawaii notified the state Department of Health's Clean Water Branch of the situation, Marine Corps officials said.

Warning signs were posted and water samples were taken.
