Coast Guard monitoring grounded vessel off Kaneohe; 2 aboard reach shore safely

Advertiser Staff

U.S. Coast Guard crews are monitoring a vessel that ran aground 700 feet off of Kapapa Island last night. The two people aboard reached shore safely in a kayak, the Coast Guard said today.

The Coast Guard reported it received an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon signal late Saturday evening from the Cosmic California, a 40- to 50-foot white, double-masted sailing vessel with white sails. The sailing vessel is slightly drifting and taking on water, and there are no signs of anyone aboard.

An HH-65 rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point searched the area for anyone in distress before the two people aboard called this afternoon and said they were safe.
