Hawaii Winter Baseball will discontinue play

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Winter Baseball announced today that it will discontinue league play.

A league press release said general managers of the Major League Baseball clubs decided for logistical reasons to move the developmental league to Arizona, where MLB already hosts the Arizona Fall League for advanced minor leaguers.

This is the second ending of HWB. The league played from 1993 to 1997. It was revived in 2006 and played until this past season. According to the press release, it was the end of a three-year contract.

"We were told it had nothing to do with what we didn't do," HWB president Hervy Kurisu said. "The logistics were the main part of the decision."
