Fire damages Kailua home

Advertiser Staff

A fire heavily damaged a four bedroom, single-story wooden home on Kihapai Street in Kailua on Tuesday night, causing seven people to flee the burning house.

All escaped without injury, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

Residents reported that the fire began in one of the rear bedrooms.

The first HFD companies were dispatched to 235 Kihapai Street at 8:58 p.m. and reported smoke and flames coming from the rear of the house. Fire fighters advanced hose lines into the structure and had the fire under control by 9:15 p.m. The fire was extinguished by 9:44 p.m. HFD dispatched two alarms to this fire; five engines, two ladders, and a Battalion Chief – approximately 35 fire fighters.

The fire destroyed over 50 percent of the home and damage is estimated at $250,000.

The American Red Cross responded and offered assistance to the displaced residents.

The fire is currently under investigation and results of the investigation will be released when completed.
