Illegal dump catches fire on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

An illegal dump on vacant land caught fire and burned about a half-acre of land and its contents yesterday, Big Island firefighters said.

No financial losses or injuries were reported. The Big Island Fire Department used about 10,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire, which was first called in at 11:56 a.m. and deemed under control at 1:30 p.m. It was extinguished by 5:30 p.m.

Two engines, five tankers and one medical unit responded to the fire as well as a chopper and three other units.
