Surfers' eco-friendly cutlery earns environmental honors

Surfers Shaun Tomson and Dave Rastovich and the Hawaii-based company Styrophobia will be honored by the Surfrider Foundation Oahu Chapter at its 6th annual John Kelly Environmental Awards this Saturday at the Waterfront at Aloha Tower.

Tomson, a former world champion from South Africa, will receive the organization's Lifetime Achievement Award. Now living in California, he has testified throughout Southern California about ocean conservation.

Rastovich, a sponsored "free surfer," is the co-founder of the whale and dolphin protection group Surfers for Cetaceans. He is active in several other ocean environmental groups and a spokesman for Save the Whales Again.

Styrophobia provides 100 percent biodegradeable takeout containers and cutlery.

The event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dinner is being catered by Town Restaurant. Tickets are $30, available at the door or at the Ecolounge party, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Indigo Restaurant tomorrow night.
