The Kapolei and Pearl City girls soccer teams entered yesterday tied for second behind Mililani in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference West Division.

They ended the day in the same position after a 1-1 tie last night at Kapolei.

Kristina Behrens scored in the first half for Kapolei and Pearl City's Christina Saturnio headed in a shot in the second half.

Pearl City co-head coach Frank Baumholtz III said of the tie: "You play a hard game and you don't get much out of it. But we learned a lot. Hopefully, next time we'll come out a little more aggressive at the beginning of the game."

Kapolei and Pearl City, who both allowed their first goals of the season, moved to 2-0-1 (7 points). Mililani, which was idle last night, is 3-0 (9 points).

Kapolei scored in the 35th minute on a rocket shot off the foot of Behrens from 21 yards. Behrens, a junior forward, received a pass from Taylor DeLa Cruz, settled the ball in the middle of the field and her high shot went off the outstretched hands of the Pearl City goalie and trickled into the net.

"I just one-touched it and put it in," Behrens said. "That was pretty much what I wanted to do."

Behrens' goal came just in time because Hurricanes head coach Brian Beck was about to take her out.

"We were actually just about to take her off," Beck said. "She was super tired.

"I say whenever you're tired just shoot and get anything on the net. Fortunately, she has a good shot, and it caught people a little bit off-guard."

The Chargers tied it 1-1 in the 56th minute on a header by Saturnio, a sophomore midfielder, following a throw-in by Makenzie Maurer that was headed into the air.

"I just tried to follow it in, and I just jumped up for the header and it went it," said Saturnio, who charged in and headed the ball past the Kapolei goal keeper.

Baumholtz said: "She got in there and did a good job. Ball coming inside and she just got up there and did it."

Kapolei finished with six shots on goal, including four in the first half.

"Credit to Pearl City," Beck said. "In the second half, they put about two or three defenders on (Behrens)."

Pearl City had two shots on goal in both halves.

PEARL CITY 4, KAPOLEI 1

The Chargers boys team got off to a hot start in its first match of the season, defeating the Hurricanes behind three first-half goals.

The Chargers' Gavin Dela Cruz (9th minute), Sean Chang (14th) and Bronson Williams (38th) scored in the first half.

"I'm very proud of the boys," said Pearl City head coach Randy Shinn. "From the start they came out ready. They played with a lot of heart. That's what I expect and that's all you can ask for."

Kapolei's Kane Owens saw a shot from the right side go off the post in the 48th minute, but the Hurricanes' Richard Gallarde finally broke through in the 57th to make it 3-1.

Pearl City's Nick Kapua scored in the 67th minute to cap the scoring.

Pearl City goal keeper Edward Jones stopped numerous shots in the second half as Kapolei (1-1) moved more players forward.
