LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Angels have pulled their eight-year offer to Mark Teixeira and will no longer go after the first baseman.

Team spokesman Tim Mead confirmed yesterday the Angels have withdrawn their offer and are "out of the Mark Teixeira derby." The team made its offer, reportedly worth about $160 million, during the winter meetings in Las Vegas earlier this month.

The Red Sox said last week that they "are not going to be a factor" in signing the 28-year-old Maryland native. Washington and Baltimore have expressed interest in Teixeira.

The Angels obtained Teixeira from the Atlanta Braves in late July. Playing in a combined 157 games with the Angels and Braves, Teixeira had 33 homers and 121 RBIs along with a career-best .308 average.

MAVERICKS EVENT ON

The Mavericks big wave surf contest lives on for another year, despite recent trouble attracting sponsors in a bad economy.

Organizers say they have lined up enough sponsorship to pay for the event, and say the contest window will open on Jan. 1 and extend through March 31.

Huge waves, cold water and a rocky coastline make Mavericks, which breaks off of Pillar Point near Half Moon Bay, Calif., one of the most challenging surfing spots in the world.

Each year surfers from around the world are on call during the contest window. The surfers get 24-hour notice when surf forecasters determine the conditions are right.

The window last year opened in December, but organizers were having trouble finding sponsors for this year's contest.

BERGERON RECOVERING

Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron, who missed most of last season with a concussion, was released from the hospital yesterday after being diagnosed with another concussion.

Bergeron spent the night at Massachusetts General Hospital and underwent extensive testing, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a statement.

"When examined this morning, his condition had improved greatly over last night, and he was released from the hospital," the statement said. "There is no timetable for his return to the ice."

Bergeron was injured in Saturday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

SPEED SKATING

OHNO CAPTURES TITLE

Apolo Anton Ohno won two more individual events yesterday at the U.S. Short Track Speedskating Championships at Chesterfield, Mo., to capture his eighth consecutive national title.

Ohno, the defending world champion and a five-time Olympic medalist, won the 1,000 and 3,000 meters to win the overall title with 4,140 points — nearly 300 more than J.R. Celski in second. Ohno has won every national title since 2001 and has 10 overall.

Katherine Reutter also swept the final two individual events to jump ahead of Kimberly Derrick and win her second consecutive national title. Reutter finished with 3,860 points and Derrick 3,640.

The top five men and women will represent the U.S. at the World Cup events in February and the world championships in March.
