Man hospitalized after shooting in Honolulu involving police officer

Advertiser Staff

A man in his 30s has been taken to a local area trauma center in serious condition with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the shoulder following an incident involving an HPD officer, authorities said.

Edison Chen, owner of Ace Auto, was sitting in his shop at about 11 a.m. when he heard yelling and screeching tires behind his business.

He ran outside and saw a man in a black Honda Civic ramming his car into two vehicles while an officer in a police car blocked him in. The man in the Honda Civic rammed the police officer's car "two or three times," Chen said, before the officer got out and pointed his gun at the car and ordered the man to get out.

The man in the Honda Civic then tried to ram the officer, Chen said.

"The officer had no choice. He shot him once then the car stopped moving," said Chen.

The shooting occurred near Rycroft and Cedar streets, two blocks 'ewa of the Ke'eaumoku Wal-Mart, at 10:57 a.m. today.

A police dispatcher said the shooting may have resulted following a traffic stop.

Preliminary indications were that no officer was injured, the dispatcher said.

Bryan Cheplic, a spokesman for the city Emergency Medical Services Division, said he could not disclose the area of the man's injury, but stressed that the medical condition was serious, not critical.

Paramedics responded to the scene at 11:02 a.m., Cheplic said.
