SAMOA OFFICIAL GETS SUSPICIOUS LETTER

A white powdery substance found in an envelope delivered to American Samoa Gov. Togiola T.A. Tulafonos' office has been sent to Honolulu for testing.

Police say the Government Executive Office Building in Pago Pago was evacuated last Thursday when the letter arrived and was opened by a member of the governor's staff. Tulafonos was not in his office at the time.

The local Homeland Security Department had issued a memo last week warning of similar mailings received by more than 40 U.S. governors' offices. The office of Hawai'i Gov. Linda Lingle received one on Dec. 10. Firefighters determined the substance was cornstarch.
