Service will be Saturday for last Kalaupapa sheriff

A service for Richard Manuel Marks, the last sheriff of Kalaupapa and founder of Damien Tours, will take place 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Mililani Mortuary's Mauka Chapel. It will be preceded by a visitation period beginning at 5 p.m.

Marks died Dec. 9 at age 79.

He had been sent to Kalaupapa, Moloka'i, as a young man after being diagnosed with Hansen's disease. He was instrumental in gaining national historic recognition for the colony.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; son, Richard; daughters, Rita Ward, Elizabeth Joshua and Elouise Lutu-Caroll; sisters, Winifred Harada and Mary Jane Ramelo; and hanai child, Josie Rapal.
