Catamaran stranded off Lanikai

Advertiser Staff

A 14-foot catamaran was stuck in the reef just off the Mokulua Islets across from Lanikai this morning, Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha said.

The fire department sent out a search and rescue crew at 7:42 a.m. but called off the search at 9:15 a.m. after finding no one, Kealoha said. The two small islands are a popular hangout for kayakers from Lanikai and Kailua, with shallow reef between them and Lanikai.

The catamaran remains overturned on the reef, and the case has been turned over to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Coast Guard, Kealoha said.

Early attempts to contact the boat owner failed, Kealoha said.
