Cause of massive outage still under investigation

HECO officials are working to figure out what caused the islandwide power outage.

Officials have said lightning is likely to blame, though they haven't yet been able to confirm that.

The National Weather Service received several reports of lightning just before the power went out.

"We got a lot of reports of lightning and thunder," said NWS meterologist Ray Tanabe. "It was a fairly active storm."

Though the thunderstorms have passed, the weather service said conditions remain unstable.

Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms through tonight.
