Buses operating on full Saturday schedule today

The city bus system will operate on a full Saturday schedule, today, said Wayne Y. Yoshioka, head of the city Department of Transportation Services.

Buses on 24-hour routes continued to operate throughout the night without problem, Yoshioka said.

"Our maintenance facility had emergency power overnight so we were able to refuel and service the buses," Yoshioka said.

HandyVan service will also be operating today, but many of the van riders use the service to get to medical facilities. It was unclear as of about 5:15 a.m. today how many of the medical facilities will be open for business as usual today, Yoshioka said.

"We may have to shift things around a bit, but the service will be operating," he said.

Traffic signal repair crews spent the night waiting for the power to come back on in various areas to make sure the signals were working properly and to reset them if necessary.

By 5 a.m., five traffic signal crews were out servicing traffic lights, Yoshioka said.

There are about 800 traffic signals on Oahu, about half of which are connected to the city's Traffic Management Center.Repair crews must do some initial reprogramming at the signals that connect to the control center, after which the reprogramming can be done at the center.

But crews must visit each of the other 400 traffic signals and reprogram them in the field, Yoshioka said.

"It will probably take all of Saturday to get all of the signals reprogrammed," Yoshioka said.

Crews began reprogramming the lights almost as soon as the power began coming back on and it was clear the power supply was stable, Yoshioka said.
