Maui, Big Island getting heavy rains

Maui and the Big Island are experiencing heavy rains, and forecasters are warning residents about the possibility of flash flooding.

A flash flood warning is in effect for Maui through 11 p.m.

The Big Island is under a flood advisory through 11:30 p.m.

At 8:18 p.m., a rain guage in Pahoa on the Big Island showed rain falling at the rate of 3 inches an hour.

Radar also showed thunderstorms occurring over many of the same areas that have already experienced heavy rains in recent days.

Residents are urged to stay away from streams and low lying areas.

Maui and Big Island police reported no major problems with the rain.
