Rainbow Classic: Buffalo beats Pepperdine 72-71

Associated Press

Andy Robinson hit a 12-foot jumper with 0.3 seconds left in overtime to lift Buffalo to a 72-71 win over Pepperdine today in first round action of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Bulls (6-4) rallied from as many as 14 points down to advance to the semifinals. The Waves (1-12) have dropped their last 12 games.

Buffalo closed out regulation on a 9-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Robinson with 2:20 left to send it into overtime.

Pepperdine scored the first six points of the extra period to take a quick 67-61 lead. However, the Bulls took their first lead since a 17-16 edge early in the first half on Greg Gamble's 10-foot baseline jumper to make it 70-69 with 31 seconds to play. The Waves shortly reclaimed the lead with 12 seconds left on a Mike Hornbuckle basket before Robinson sealed it for Buffalo. Hornbuckle was called for an offensive foul on the ensuing inbounds pass and the Bulls ran out the clock.

Pepperdine led 32-20 at halftime despite committing 14 turnovers. Buffalo shot just 26 percent (8 of 31) from the field in the first half, including an abysmal 1 of 14 from 3-point range. It was the first-ever meeting between the schools.
