Winter weather advisory issued for Big Island summits

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island.

The advisory, issued at about 8 a.m. today, said snow showers are likely throughout the day across the summits of the state's two highest peaks

The snow level will begin near the 12,000-foot level and snowfall accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected, forecasters said.

In addition, east to southeast winds of up to 20 mph will result in local blowing and drifting snow.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties.

Motorists should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.

The advisory is expected to remain in effect until 6 p.m. today.
