Advertiser Staff and News Services

A Web site that specializes in highlighting discount hotel offers is including Hawai'i as one of the top destinations for hotel deals in 2009.

The site www.DealBase.com, said Las Vegas, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Miami will be among the top leisure destinations when it comes to offering discounts. It said hotels here, beset by falling occupancy, have already started enhancing offerings, including offering rental cars with room bookings.

It predicted some four-star resorts here will offer packages with effective nightly rates of less than $79 a night during 2009.

In Las Vegas, DealBase projects midweek rates below $10 a night at three-star hotels on the strip. It is projecting four-star hotel rooms for less than $125 a night in New York City and vacation packages at five-star South Beach resorts for less than $119 a night in Miami.

LIGHTNING HITS HAWAIIAN AIR FLIGHT

A Hawaiian Airlines flight was struck by lightning early Friday morning as it traveled from Honolulu to Hilo.

Hawaiian Flight 102 sustained only superficial damage and was delayed by about 15 minutes. There were no injuries to passengers or crew.

Hawaiian said it canceled the return Hilo-to-Honolulu flight and rebooked passengers on later flights. The plane was sent back to Honolulu empty for inspection.

The incident occurred roughly 12 hours before an outage cut power to all of O'ahu, including Honolulu Airport.
