A 64-year-old man was killed yesterday when the 1988 Volkswagen van he was driving collided with a Ford Ranger pickup truck on Makena Alanui Drive.

Police said Patrick Gibson lost control of the northbound van at about 6:19 a. m. and crossed the center line, hitting the oncoming truck. The collision happened about 825 feet south of Makena Road.

The 56-year-old Kahului man driving the Ford Ranger was treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center for minor injuries and released.

Maui County has had 23 traffic fatalities this year compared with 21 by this day last year.
